Final Logo Design - IDEA

This was our first, final logo design idea for our production company logo. We decided on this one because we thought it was the most who presented the conventions of a thriller the most in comparison to the others. The typography presents evil and negative connotations, which could be related to thriller and horror genres. The red coloured font relates to demonic and hell like ideas, as hell is thought to be fire filled and made for the bad. However, after thinking about this logo design we decided that it was too horror based rather than thriller. Although our film had a sense of horror and torture in it, the storyline is not gruesome and wouldn't be classed as a 'horror'. We don't want to confuse our audience with the two genres we want them to be clear on the genre otherwise they may misinterpret our film.

Dyers Star Representation Theory

Mise-en-scene in my film - Facial Expressions and Body Language

In our film, facial expressions and body language have a huge effect on how the audience interpret the role of each of the characters. Nicole (the main protagonist), in the lead up to the conflict of the scene acts very weak and nervous as she hesitantly strolls through the forest. Her facial expressions shows sheer panic which makes the audience feel nervous and on the edge of their seat as they can tell by her emotive body language and facial expressions that something is about to happen.

For the main antagonist (the villain), his facial expressions are very bland and shows no emotion which is confusing for the audience as they do not know what to expect from this character. However, his eager and pacey body language creates scare and horror for the audience is it clearly highlights the danger of the character.

The third character, Olivia (the missing person), her facial expressions demonstrate pain and agony as she is being held hostage and tortured so this makes it clear to the audience that she is the victim in the scene. Due to the fact she is tied up on the floor, this shows she is weak and vulnerable as she unable to move or do anything. This introduces the audience to the plot and storyline of the film and they can begin to anticipate what has and what will happen.

Mise-en-scene in my film - Camera Angles

In our film we have decided to use a variety of camera angles. This consists of, long shots, close up shots, extreme close up shots, match-on-action shot, reverse shot and extreme long shots.

During the beginning of the film more long shots are used at it is building the atmosphere of the movie, however at the very start there is a reverse shot to show Nicole reading the tweet on her phone. Long shots are used to show Nicole walking her dogs along the track in the forest, it is likely we could use close up shots of her feet walking when filming. We then will use a close up shot when she discovers the 'Missing Person' poster on the floor, this will introduce the plot of story to the audience. A mixture of long shots and close up shots will be used to create a tense and eerie atmosphere so the audience are unaware of the surroundings, especially when the dog is running after and Nicole chases after her.

When Nicole then finds her friend (the missing person) tied up in the forest, a long shot will be used to show that someone is there, then a close shot to show who the girl is exactly then it will be a close up shot of the antagonist (the villain). When Nicole begins to run a mixture of long and close up shots will be included to show the pace and panic of the moment. Once in her car, reverse shots will be used to create mystery as to what is behind her as if someone is watching her from behind, then suddenly from a reverse shot we will see the villain stood in the wind mirror of the car, which will shock the audience and make them scared as it will be unexpected especially as we will use close up shots to show the villains facial identity.

Mise-en-scene in my film - Location

The location we scouted for our film was Thorndon Country Park. We chose this location out of a possible 2 others because it was the largest deserted space which meant that we was at less of a risk of capturing nearby pedestrians in our shots. It also meant that less people would be effective by the recording of our film due to the fact it is a relatively deserted area so different costumes and sound will not be prevented.

This location was ideal for us because it has a large capacity of forest meaning it will easier for us to gain our favoured low-key lighting which we intend to use in our filming. It also makes it more discreet as the audience are less aware of the surroundings due to hidden features behind trees.

Mise-en-scene in my film - Costumes, make-up and hair

In our film we use make-up to show that Nicole (the main protagonist) is stressed and worn out by creating dark circles under her eyes and looking pale. Her make-up will not be exotic and will kept to minimal to look natural so she clearly looks run-down rather than frightening.

Then, for our main antagonist we will use face paint and make up to show that they have been tortured and are psychopathic due to their unnatural and slightly inhumane facial colouring through the use of dark, black circles around the eyes and battered and bruised features. This shows the role of this character as it will be frightening for the audience showing he is the villain.

For the missing girl (Olivia), similar to Nicole she will have make up showing that she is ill. However, Olivia's will show that she is being tortured as her face will consist of bruises and scars showing she is being held hostage or not in a safe place. The different make ups will show the different roles of the characters and the vulnerability of them.

Mise-en-scene in my film - Lighting

In our film we are planning on using low-key lighting due to our chosen genre, Thriller. Low-key lighting is suitable for our film as it creates the eerie atmosphere needed for our film. However, at one point in our film we will have a moment with high-key lighting when the main victim is spotted to emphasize who she is and the exoticness of the moment.

Due to the fact we are filming in a forest with natural light it is going to be difficult to have perfect low-key lighting due to the weather. If it is sunny it will be more high-key lighting so will be harder to find shadows, nonetheless we can simply just edit the colouring and contrast's of the clips that we film when on the computer to make them into low-key lighting.

Risk Assessment

Final Audition

This is the final male audition for the antagonist. This is the male that we then chose to play the part for the antagonist because he showed strong emotive in her voice and body language and he also demonstrated passion in his audition which is ideal for the role of the Psychopath as they need to clearly show their mental state and how they are dangerous. Focus Group Feedback Analysis

From our focus group, the feedback we gained was that I (Billie) was suitable for the main antagonist role of the girl walking the dog, the focus group stated that I was perfect for the role due to my show of strong emotion and passion in my voice in my audition. I also showed a strong sense of confidence which is essential in my role.

The focus group then stated how Jody was also suitable for the role of the helper (the person tied up in the woods being tortured) as she also showed strong confidence and emotion in her voice and body language in her audition. This is also essential for this role as the character needs to show extreme pain and torture in their act so they must be confident and be able to project their voice.

The focus group stated that we need to audition more boys for the role of the protagonist as the current boys who audition was not up to standard or showed suitable for the role. We was advised to audition more boys to play the role of the protagonist, because of this we decided to aution Todd. He seemed perfect for the role so we have decided to use him for the role as he showed confidence and is very emotive in his voice and body language.

We also gained positive feedback from our questionnaires. The focus group agreed with all of our questions so our current ideas are able to stay with us for our film opening. They agreed that Thordon was the best location out of the possible Shenfield Common and King Georges Park. They also stated how dark woods is the most suitable location for a thriller in regards to a house or a street. Lastly, they agreed that a cockapoo is the best dog to use for the thriller as it is cute which juxtaposes the idea or scare and horror which is abit of a plot twist for the audience.

Costume Mood Board

Summary of our selection of actors

Why did we select these film actors?

We specifically handpicked these actors as we feel they are most suitable for our film. We decided to use a girl instead of a boy to be tied down on the chair as it highlights how the Clowns targets mainly women as they are seen weaker than men and more vulnerable. Also, because the Clown hides his real identity through his Clown outfit, it shows how he is a coward which is why he goes for women as he would find men intimidating and scary.

We chose Mason Marrable to play the clown, this is because his audition showed his strong, confident personality and proved he was capable of playing the role. We then chose Jody Cook to play the role of the tied up girl being tortured. This is because she had a high screaming voice which was suitable for the whole 'torture' aspect. She also showed good facial expressions which demonstrated how she could portray the role well. The final character we chose to play the girl walking to dog was me (Billie Ayres). We decided on me as I have a strong, confident personality so I will be able to play the role exactly how we want it to go.

Casting Audition and Monlogue

We have chosen this script as we feel this is an opportunity for our contestants to shine through and show their confidence and acting ability. We created this script and we think it will make contestants feel embarrassed when they have to scream, this is an opportunity for us to judge and see if they are suitable for the tasks they will be performing in our film.

Person 1: N/A
Person 2: Auditioner

Monologue:

Person 1: Where have you been?

Person 2: Nowhere, it doesn’t concern you anyway. (agitated)

Person 1: Alright mate, I was just asking.

Person 2: Alright, well just leave me alone now, I want some alone time. (depressed)

Person 1: Okay, I guess I’ll see you at school then, will you be in?

Person 2: JUST LEAVE ME ALONE! (scream/frustrated)

Auditions and Casting

People we have decided to audition for our film are the following:

Jack Friesenda
Billie Ayres
Michael Brennan
Jack Ross
James Sutherland
Jody Cook
Mason Marrable

We have specifically chose to the audition these people purely because we are aware of each individuals outgoing personality which is what we are looking for when chosing the perfect actors. We need actors who are confident and are able to do what we tell them to in order for us to create our film to the highest possible standard.

Location List

Our main reason for using this type of location is due to the weather. This is because there is no leaves on the tree's during the time of year we will be filming, it is also dark and gloomy outside so it makes the atmosphere for frightening. It is also cold and bitter so there will be hardly no-one outside at it is too cold. Our final reason linking to weather is because leaves will be all over the ground, so it can suggest that something is being covered and hidden.

Using a woods is also suitable as it is gives us a wide variety to perform different camera angles and different settings. It is good for our genre as the deserted location will create an atmosphere in itself.

How can Uses and Gratification help you to generate questions for my audience research?

Uses and Gratification helps me generate questions for my audience research as it allows me to recognise different audience opinions and demands. This is because this theory focuses of audience and their power as consumers of the media as I am able to ask them why they make certain choices and what they gain from certain media products. Without the audience, the media would be nothing. The media needs the audience in order fulfil their needs and desires.

This theory allows me to gain individual audience research such as the need for personal identity, so what each individual needs to be satisfied with a film. I am able to find out why each person watches certain films, at certain times in certain places etc. It also enables me to find out why each individual needs reassurance and routine. For example, if a TV programme is on a certain time each night but on an occasion it is on later due to football or for another reason - a loyal consumer tends to get annoyed as it is out of routine and they believe nothing is more important them their programme and their routine.

Nether the less, there is still issues with this theory. One issue would be that it is a difficult theory to go anywhere with or put in place purely because it has such a wide variety of answers as it relies on its audience. Therefore, it is easy for me to do my audience research with this theory as it based purely on audience opinion and demand.
It is an also an issue for the media as it gives the audience more power than the media producers.

I think that the Uses and Gratification theory is a good researcher tool for me as it allows to get opinions from many individuals which I can round up and see what mosts consumers want within media products. It gives me a clear understanding of why different individuals want different things and how as a media group we can compromise to create the best outcome for the film.

Does Uses and Gratifications provide enough analysis in Thriller?

'Prisoners' - 2013
The film prisoners is based on the kidnapping of two young girls. It doesn't really give you any real information e.g. historic or social events. However, it does provide us as an audience with information and footage of what happens during police investigations and how these crimes are investigated.

It allows the audience to identify the characters and relate to the feelings of the trauma which has happened. For example, the audience become aware of the feelings of anger and extreme torturous reaction which the father of one of the daughters takes on the suspect. It enables the audience to engage with the father as we are able to feel his pain and upset. In contrast, the audience are also able to engage with the feelings of the mother. These are feelings of not so much anger, just pain and guilt. This makes the audience feel from her point of view, we release the anger and just imagine the pain in the heart of a mother who had just lost her daughter.

Prisoners is not a film which I would suggest watching for 'relaxation'. However, it would certainly be watched for entertainment purposes. This film is so twisted and thrilling that it keeps you on the edge of your seat, so it is extremely entertaining to watch. Your eyes would be peeled the screen throughout the film and then at the end it leaves you mesmerised and shocked at the different plot twists included in the film.

I think this film does provide social interaction for the audience, because it is so anticipating and the outcome is so unexpected. This means that once the film has finished, it will provide  the audience who watched it to interact with each other at how thrilling the film was. It will also create conversation between them as people will be stating how they sussed the storyline out before one another.

Due to the fact Thriller films are so dramatic and realistic, it provides a sense of escapism and emotional release for the audience. This is because it allows the audience to relate themselves to one of the characters, either for the fact that they are heroic and they influence the audience or the character may be going through similar circumstances to the audience or may just have similar personalities and thoughts so it allows the audience to escape from their own life and experience someone else thoughts and feelings.

How is Uses and Gratification applied to Thriller

Uses and Gratification
Personal Identity - finding reinforcement for personal values, finding models of behaviour, identifying with another, gaining insight into ones self.
Information - finding out about relevant events and conditions in immediate surroundings, society and the world, seeking advice on practical matters or opinion and decision choices, satisfying curiosity and general interest, learning, self-educating, gaining a sense of security via knowledge.
Entertainment - escapism, being diverted from problems, relaxing, emotional release, aesthetic/cultural/sexual pleasure.
Social Interaction and Integration - gaining insight into circumstances of others; social empathy, identifying with others and gaining a sense of belonging, finding a basis for conversation and social interaction, having a substitute for real life companionship, helping carry out social roles, enabling one to connect with family, friends and society.

Why do people watch Thrillers?
From using the uses and gratifications theory we are able to recognise that Thrillers are watched for entertainment, information, social interaction, integration and personal values which is therefore why Thriller is such a popular genre. People watch Thrillers mostly for the thrill, twist and entertainment of the film, this links in with escapism and emotional release as people will watch the films and become so intrigued in the plot that they can escape from their own life and emotions and connect with the emotions portrayed in the film. Thrillers a generally not created to relax, the audience needs to be focused on what is happening in order to understand the storyline. Nevertheless, Thrillers are also watched to save time just like other films. For example, the thriller film 'Prisoners' holds the storyline of two little girls going missing. Every parents worst nightmare, however something so often identified in films, programmes and books. This allows the audience to recognise how people who experience such awful events really feel and the audience would get an insight to this and feel the same emotions as them.

Some audiences may watch Thrillers in order to gain an insight into a different circumstances in life. Some films may relate to real life stories they know so it gives a sense of realism to the audience. Thriller films are often watched in the company of people so it brings people together (trips to the cinema, all sitting in the living room etc.). Then once the film has finished it gives people a basis of conversation to talk about, this is because Thrillers are not only action-pact they are also twisted and can take a lot of thinking to understand what is going on. This gives the audience the 'Thrill' of the film, often leaving them intrigued. This then again enables conversation between people as people will tend to boast about who sussed out the ending before one another.

People also watch horrors to find a models of behaviour. This is because there is usually a clear comparison between between the protagonist and antagonist in the film, this would then influence people to act heroically like a character in the film. Alternatively, people could relate to certain characters and compare them to themselves.

Finally, people can also watch Thrillers for informative reasons. Although Thrillers purpose is not to inform, the audience may gain information from historical or social events which are demonstrated in the film which would give the audience an insight into this real life situation.
